Since the first event in 1992, Toast Martinborough has become a key fixture in the New Zealand wine and food calendar. It brings together the unbeatable combination of premium wines, outstanding food and great music
The annual event, held on the third Sunday in November, sees the population of the charming south Wairarapa town swell tenfold as wine and food lovers throughout the country come to celebrate the release of the new vintage.
Each of the 10 participating vineyards features culinary delights from Wellington and Wairarapa’s finest restaurants that are carefully matched to complement the winemaker’s selection, along with some of New Zealand’s best live entertainment.
A special feature of the event is the opportunity for festival-goers to sample new release wines along with wines from vintages that have sold out but that have been held over for the festival.
The popularity of Toast Martinborough is reflected in the demand for tickets, with the 10,000 tickets selling out in just 5 minutes in 2008. It’s also evident in the number of festival goers who return to the festival year after year. Over 80% of festival goers have been to more than one Toast Martinborough, while a third of revellers have attended the festival at least 5 times.
Each festival site has entertainment scheduled throughout the day featuring some of the country’s top performers. Festival goers can pick a site to suit their mood – easy jazz and lazy blues or upbeat rock and dance floor pop.
Wander between vineyards throughout the day or simply linger under a shady tree and enjoy the music, wine and people watching. Transport and parking hassles are eliminated by the close proximity of vineyards and free shuttle buses running all day.
The event reflects the unusually collaborative spirit of this small community, with its concentration of small, boutique wineries and dedication to producing superior, hand crafted wines.
With tickets being so sought after, the best way to guarantee being a part of the Toast Martinborough experience is to become a ‘Friend of Martinborough’. Unique membership privileges include guaranteed access to tickets and a limited number of travel packages from Wellington. Limited numbers and special conditions apply.
